Ahmedabad is well known for its textile mills and is often referred as the 'Manchester of the East'. The Hindu kingdom of Karnavati was defeated by the Muslim Sultanate in 1411 A.D. The Sultan believed that the land is sanctified as he laid the foundation of Ahmedabad. Thus the city was found on January 26th and named as Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad was built in an open spacious plain in the immediate vicinity of Ashaval to the east of Sabarmati. The city was enclosed by a fort wall six miles in the circumference containing 12 gates, 189 bastions and over 6000 battlements in 1487. As time passed, the city of Ahmedabad went on a huge expansion in all aspects. New localities were formed.

The city then began to upgrade as a well built city. Ahmedabad was beautified by mansions, mosques and gardens of the Sultans. This city is well known for its rich history and its association with Mahatma (Great Soul), also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Ahmedabad offers travelers a unique style of architecture, blended in both the Hindu and Islamic styles. The monuments of Ahmedabad are of the 15th century.
